Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary

Idukki wildlife sanctuary is located 40 kilometers from the Thodapuzha district of Idukki. It is spread over an area of 77 square kilometers and is located at a height of about 750 meters above sea level. Idukki national park, Kerala is a prime attraction for tourists coming from far and wide. The Idukki sanctuary lies very close to the Idukki dam. The huge dam and the adjoining lake add a different charm to the sanctuary.

You will find a plethora of wildlife and plants in the Idukki sanctuary. The sanctuary is essentially covered with dense tropical evergreen and deciduous trees. Many plants that have medicinal value are also found aplenty over here. Among animals, there are a number of wild beasts like wild dogs, jungle cats, bisons, elephants, deer and bear.

A large variety of reptiles are also found here that include snakes like cobras, kraits, vipers and also a number of non-poisonous snakes.

Idukki wildlife sanctuary is a bird watcher's paradise. There are number of birds found here like kingfisher, peacocks, bulbul, eagles, jungle fowl, etc. The sanctuary is located near the dam, hence has boating facilities also. People can come here to explore the unseen and unexplored wildlife.

Air : The nearest airport is the Cochin International airport, located at a distance of 132 kilometers.

Rail : The nearest railway station is at Kottayam at a distance of 133 kilometers.

Road : The sanctuary is well connected to the rest of Kerala through a wide network of roadways and can be reached from anywhere in the world.
