Eravikulam National Park

Located at a distance of 15 kilometers from Munnar, the Idukki Eravikulam national park is home to the endangered specie of a mountain goat called the Nilgiri Tahr. The Eravikulam national park, Kerala is home to one of the biggest moths in the world called the Atlas moth. The national park also has number of exotic plants. The highest peak of south India called Anaimudi is located in this sanctuary, which lends a mystical charm to the landscape.

One can visit the sanctuary anytime in the year. Just avoid the monsoons though, as it is unsafe to travel in the thickets during the rainy season. Also, tourists can go upto only a particular point in the sanctuary.

The dense areas are almost inaccessible and thus are not entered. The animals found over here include leopards, tigers, lion tailed macaque, Nilgiri Langur and many species of deer and monkeys. One also go for a trek on the Anaimudi peak and feel the adrenalin rush.

Main attractions: Birds: Indian rollers, cuckoos, common snipes, crow pheasants, jungle nightjar, kites, grey drongos, Malabar trongons, woodpeckers, large pied wagtails, baya sparrows, grey jngle fowls, Indian hill mynas, robins, jungle babblers, sunbirds and darters.

Rare Birds: Crimson-throated barbets, bee-eaters, shrikes, fairy bluebirds, grey-headed fishing eagles, black winged kites, night herons, grey hornbills and Malabar hornbills.

Air : The Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport to the sanctuary.

Rail : The nearest railway station is at Aluva, at a distance of 115 kilometers.

Road : This sanctuary is easily accessible by roads as it is well connected to all major cities and towns of Kerala.


Best Time to Visit :

The best Time to visit Eravikulam National Park is from November to April.
